Function of the lambda probe
The lambda probe is a special sensor with a special task because it measures the remaining residual oxygen content in an exhaust pipe. When the measurement has been made, then the lambda probe regulates the fuel content and the oxygen content in such a way that there is no surplus of one of the elements. In this control loop, the probe is the actual main sensor when it comes to the values of exhaust gas and the catalyst involved. Due to the two different measurements there's also two different lambda sensors. The Nernst probe monitors the voltage of the solid electrolyte and the resistor probe measures the change of resistance of a ceramic. The latter is generally used in petrol engines, although in a few cases it is also used in Diesel engines. Well-known producers include BOSCH, NGK, BLUEPRINT, MAGNETI MARELLI, VEMO, DELPHI, STARK.
The use of the lambda probe
In simple Otto engines, the lambda probe is installed into the exhaust manifold or in the manifold, namely just behind the manifold. Should a high demand of purification of exhaust gas exist on part of the manufacturer then multiple of these probes can be used. In a gasoline engine with turbocharger, the lambda probe is screwed directly behind the turbocharger, although manufacturers are looking for a better solution currently.
What happens if the lambda probe is damaged and what repercussions does it have?
If a lambda probe is defective, then this will show through the deteriorated emission levels and this will at the latest be noticed during the statutory emissions test. But even when noticing a significant drop in performance when accelerating, it can partly be associated with a defective lambda probe. Even dark clouds coming from the exhaust, are an indication of a faulty probe. A simple visual inspection can be done prior to removal, to see if a cable simply might have come loose. Modern vehicles can also be read out with a control unit, which then shows whether the probe is still working or is defective. If the lambda probe is defective, then it must be replaced immediately because a repair is not possible. Since the change is not difficult, every hobby mechanic can carry out the exchange.
