Function and purpose of the tappet and the push rod

The opening and closing of the air inlet and exhaust gas outlet channels is performed in a conventional four-stroke engine in motor vehicles via the valves. The correct time sequence of the mechanism is ensured by the valve control. An important component of the control valve, the valve plunger, which either together with pushrods and rocker arms, directly transmits the lifting movements of the camshaft to the valves to open them. Hydraulic tappets are particularly widespread in car engines , in which the automatic compensation of the valve clearance is carried out hydraulically. Valve clearance is caused by the thermal expansion of the valve, whereby it would not close completely during operation without the necessary balance. In direct operation, the valves, or the ram are opened immediately by the camshaft above.
