Function and purpose of the tappet and the push rod
The opening and closing of the air inlet and exhaust gas outlet channels is performed in a conventional four-stroke engine in motor vehicles via the valves. The correct time sequence of the mechanism is ensured by the valve control. An important component of the control valve, the valve plunger, which either together with pushrods and rocker arms, directly transmits the lifting movements of the camshaft to the valves to open them. Hydraulic tappets are particularly widespread in car engines , in which the automatic compensation of the valve clearance is carried out hydraulically. Valve clearance is caused by the thermal expansion of the valve, whereby it would not close completely during operation without the necessary balance. In direct operation, the valves, or the ram are opened immediately by the camshaft above. In engines with a camshaft placed at the bottom lying in the crankcase, the valves are actuated via pushrods and rocker arms. The push rod is coated with a protective sleeve kit. Known manufacturers of valve lifters, pushrods and thermowells include FEBI BILSTEIN, AJUSA, INA, RUVILLE, SWAG, VAICO and IPSA.
When the valve tappets rattle or are defective
The components of the tappet control are subject to wear through constant mechanical and thermal stress, but the camshaft or the valves themselves are designed to last for the life of the vehicle. Due to the high mechanical stress, however, the hydraulic tappers are more affected by wear. This is noticeable by a rattling or clicking noise that you can still hear a long time after the engine was started. With a feeler gauge the fit between the camshaft and hydraulic tappetlifters can be checked and should not exceed the maximum distance set by the manufacturer's instructions. In a defective tappet control, the valves may be damaged or even engine damage can be caused when the tappet are left in the open position and collide with the piston.
Buying tappets
Worn tappets and pushrods should be replaced immediately. With the necessary knowledge and technical skills, you can exchange these parts yourself, following the exact implementation of the repair depending the construction and design of the motor, or the tappet control. All the necessary parts can be obtained particularly inexpensively in our online shop. We also carry many other spare parts in OEM quality for many car makes and models.
