Fuel filter function and construction
Fuel contains impurities, which can lead to premature wear or damage to the injection system. A fuel filter is used, which makes a significant contribution to the optimal functioning of the engine by removing dirt particles from the fuel. Fuel filters are installed in the fuel line up to the engine. Gasoline engines usually use full flow filters, which are arranged on the pressure side of the fuel pump inside the fuel line. They have a housing made of plastic or metal, in which you find a filter element made of a paper-like fabric. Diesel engines usually filter in cartridge form with greater volume, similar to an oil filter. This filters out water contained in the diesel fuel. Well-known brands among others are MANN-FILTER, BOSCH fuel filter, KNECHT, MAHLE ORIGINAL, MAPCO, VALEO and VAICO.
How often should the fuel filter be changed?
The filtered impurities are added to the fuel filter with time, reducing the flow rate of the fuel. If the fuel filter is clogged the motor run is uneven due to the lower fuel supply and the engine performance decreases. It is advisable therefore to regularly replace the filter, although the replacement interval depends on the type and quality of the fuel used. It may also be necessary to replace the filters earlier if you are using biodiesel, due to the higher water content if the water on the filter cannot be drained. Generally, usually a filter change should take place after about 60,000 kilometres.
Replacing the fuel filter, save money by doing it yourself
With a bit of skill the fuel filter is easy to change on your own. You can order the matching filter in our online store easily and inexpensively. We carry high-quality fuel filters for many car brands, as well as many other spare parts. For vehicles with diesel engines, the filter is located in the engine compartment. Depending on the vehicle model, usually the fuel lines, which are attached and fastened with clips on the filter, must be removed. If necessary, the filter must also be removed by a bracket. For vehicles with petrol engines, the filter is usually located under the car near the fuel tank. The vehicle must be lifted or driven on a loading ramp first. Then the filter is found and removed and replaced after you remove the fuel lines from the brackets.
