Parking brake / hand brake function. General Information
The parking brake can permanently block the wheels of a motor vehicle to prevent it from unintentionally rolling away. The parking brake is used mainly in the stopping and parking of the vehicle. Most cars operate a parking brake using a hand lever; the term hand brake is a common synonym as well. Alternatively, some vehicle models have a foot lever instead. Via the hand or foot lever the braking force is usually transmitted by a cable on the brakes of the two rear wheels. The tension can be adjusted gradually, which is manifested by a click from the lever. In addition to the conventional brakes, newer car models increasingly have an electronic handbrake, or electric parking brake or park brakes. Their function is automatically controlled by an electronic control unit, where the braking power is generated and transmitted by a motor gearbox (actuator). Well-known manufacturers of spare parts for the brake include ATE, TRW, BLUE PRINT, NK, BOSCH, HERTH + BUSS and LPR.
Inspecting the parking brake - possible defects on the parking brake
The parking brake’s function should be checked regularly due to the importance it plays in the reliability of the car. This will be done during a general inspection of the vehicle. Regular use prevents the parking brake from rusting or freezing. If the hand brake is frozen is frozen in winter, then the seals or a layer in the brake cable are damaged and water has probably entered. If the brake cable is too loose the parking brake may no longer be fully tightened. Often, you can resolve the problem by adjusting the brake cable. However, worn brake pads can also be the cause of a bad brake which must be changed accordingly. A snapped brake cable leads to a complete failure of the parking brake, and needs to be replaced immediately.
If the hand brake is broken
With the right knowledge some hand brake repairs can also be done at home. Electric brakes are more difficult to repair. The adjustment of the brake is usually done via adjusting screws on the rear brakes and the brake lever. When changing brake cables or brake pads, you should get instructions from the relevant literature or the Internet.
