The tasks of the wheel cylinder / wheel brake cylinder
Even today, many modern cars can be found with drum brakes on the rear axle. With disc brakes the wheels are slowed down with calipers and brake discs. Drum brakes, however, work differently. Here the wheel cylinders and brake drums are used to generate the braking effect. The braking force generated by the main brake cylinder when the brake pedal is pressed through the brake lines and the brake hoses into the wheel brake cylinders. Typically, in a car brake the pistons in the wheel brake cylinders press directly on the brake shoes. These then move apart and thereby exert their braking on the brake drums. Together with the brake calipers, the wheel brake cylinders are very important components of the hydraulic brake system. They are mounted together with the brake shoes, a generally automatic adjusting device for the brake pads, as well as other parts on the so-called brake anchor plate. Well-known manufacturers of wheel brake cylinders are BOSCH, DELPHI, NK, ATE, LPR, TRW, and BREMBO.
The function of the wheel cylinder
Inside the cylindrically built wheel brake there are two pistons which move laterally from the cylinder outside from inside. The connector for the brake fluid is located at the back of the device. There is usually also a ventilation port through which the air can escape, air which formed in the interior before installation. Usually this connection is located directly next to the connection to the braking system. Appropriate dust protection sleeves protect the piston against dirt and corrosion. These seals cannot be damaged under any circumstances. During installation of the device this should always be kept in mind. The wheel brake cylinder is generally mounted centrally above the brake anchor plate.
Defective wheel brake cylinders and the replacement of components
If a wheel cylinder is leaking, you should take action immediately. The brake drum must be removed to replace a defective brake wheel cylinder. The brake shoes must also be removed. At least the replacement of the wheel brake cylinder will be easier thanks to it. The brake line must also be removed when replacing a cylinder. Some brake fluid will leak out of course, which should be caught in a drip tray. After loosening the fastening screw of the cylinder, it can be removed and replaced with a new one. After installation the entire braking system must be bled. In addition, the automatic adjuster should be reset. If you want to replace a wheel cylinder or repair it, then you can order it at low cost and quickly in our shop.
