How does a brake drum work?
Along with the brake shoes, the brake drum is the most important part of the drum brakes. This is a friction brake, in which the brake pads act on the cylindrical shaped friction surface of the drum during the braking process; thus slowing down the rotation of the wheel. The brake drum is responsible for absorbing and deriving the friction heat generated in this process. There can be quite a lot of heat energy absorbed, which is why a brake drum can become extremely overheated when braking. It sits at the wheel of a vehicle where the wheel bearing is often integrated into the brake drum as part of the drum brake. Well-known manufacturers of brake parts are BOSCH, ATE, TRW, LPR, BREMBO, DELPHI and JURID.
If the brake drum is broken: causes and consequences
Brake drums are often made of a special alloy metal which can withstand high mechanical and thermal stresses for long periods of time. Despite their long lifespans, brake drums will wear out with time. Water and road dirt, such as road salt in winter, will also have a corrosive effect on them. The mechanical abrasion of the friction surface will cause the inner diameter of a drum to increase over the course of time. If it becomes too big, there is no longer the optimal contact between brake pads and friction surface, and there cannot be a reliable braking performance when decelerating any longer. Therefore, a brake drum should be replaced at the latest when the inner diameter exceeds the specified limit, same as if there is visible damage or deformation, as it is a significant road safety component. It is recommended that you do an axis-wide replacement to ensure uniform braking power to both wheels of the axle. It is sometimes recommended to replace the wheel bearings at the same time.
Replacing and buying the brake drum. Where can I order one?
Replacing a brake drum should only be done by an individual with sufficient knowledge and repair experience; otherwise it should be carried out by a professional. When replacing a brake drum, the vehicle must first be lifted and secured, and then the wheel can be removed. The brake drum should then be able to be rotated freely; the handbrake might then be released. Then the supports and, if necessary, and further fixtures will have to be removed before the brake drum can be pulled off or unscrewed from the brake shoes. You can order all the necessary parts easily and conveniently in our online shop where you can also find many other spare parts in OEM quality.
