Crankcase - Function and Task
The crankcase is the central component of an internal combustion engine including cylinders and cooling jacket, and is often equated with the concept of the engine block. It serves to support the crankshaft and to absorb the forces generated during the combustion process. Moreover, the crankcase is to dissipate the resulting heat of combustion of the engine to the cooling system. At the bottom of the crankcase it connects to the oil pan, the upper area of the cylinder head.Admitted into the crankcase are the cylinders, or the cylinder liners that form the running surfaces for the respective pistons of the engine. The crankcase of most car engines consist of a casting, said crankcase manufacturers commonly used iron or cast light metal as the material. The crankcase forms a closed space in which to gather escaping gases during the combustion processwith the cylinder head and the oil pan. These so-called blow-by gases are discharged through the crankcase ventilation. In the closed crankcase ventilation ,standard in modern car engines, they are routed through a vent valve in the intake system and burned along with the fuel. The crankcase ventilation valve usually has an oil mist separator to prevent contamination of the intake tract.Known manufacturers of components (such as frost plugs, gasket kits, covers, etc.) for the crankcase include FEBI BILSTEIN, AJUSA, ELRING, REINZ, and SWAG.
If the crankcase is leaking
The crankcase itself is designed, in spite of the high demands on the material, to last for the duration of a vehicle's life and requires no special maintenance. Under normal operating conditions it is rare to be damaged, but damaged sealing elements can cause leaks around the crankcase itself or the crankcase ventilation.Especially with vehicles whose engines are powered by a gasoline system case with fuel, it can happen that the crankcase becomes full ofpetrol. The motor can be seriously damaged in this way, so the petrol that entered the crankcase should be removed.
Repairs to the crankcase
The removal or replacement of the entire crankcase must generally take place in a workshop, which has the appropriate options to lift the engine block. Technically experienced persons may carry out some repairs to peripheral devices or the change of sealing parts on their own. All the necessary parts can be ordered easily and inexpensively in our online shop. We also carry many other parts from known brand manufacturers for many car makes and models.
