Faulty cambelts can cause engine damage
Cambelts are used for the camshaft, the air compressor, the water pump and for the engine control. These are usually made of plastic, fiberglass or steel wire reinforcement. The cambelts are among the car parts that should be checked on a regular basis. The cambelts should be checked with special attention not to be buckled. Furthermore, no oil should be smeared nor cracks should be present. If the cambelt is adjusted correctly, it brings the advantage of low fuel consumption increased engine power The opening and closing (valve timing) is adjusted by the arrangement of the angle of the crankshaft and camshaft. Well-known manufacturers of cambelts are for example CONTITECH, DAYCO, BOSCH, GATES, SKF, FEBI BILSTEIN, and JAPANPARTS.
Engine damage as a result of cracked cambelt
A crack or the slipping of the belt may result in engine damage, because the valves and the piston collide. This is attributable to the high compression ratio per minimum combustion space in modern engines, because these have large, wide-opening valves for rapid gas exchange. That is what makes it so important to undergo regular checks on the cambelt and if necessary to replace it with a new kit - belt and tensioner.
When should you replace the cambelt? The repair
The cambelt is practically a “life insurance” for the vehicle engine and if it is neglected or it is not renewed at the specified intervals then there is a risk that it will break. This leads, as already mentioned to complete engine failure. Automatic tensioners ensure the streamlining of the cambelt. It is also common, however, to do this using the adjustment levers, which are fixed to the auxiliary equipment. Thus, a preliminary streamlining can is possible. Since the exchange is quite extensive and requires usually special tools to adjust the timing or to tighten the belt, this job should be done by an expert. In some vehicles, the water pump can be replaced simultaneously because it is driven by the cambelts.
