Gas springs - Function and use in motor vehicles
A gas compression spring, often simply referred to as a gas spring, is a pneumatic spring which serves as part of an opening and holding device that opens and closes a trunk lid, hood or tailgate. Additionally, gas springs can be used for example as a steering or engine damper. A gas spring is generally composed of a cylinder filled with gas, usually with nitrogen. Inside, there is a freely movable piston, which has an opening through which the filling gas can flow to one or another side of the piston. The movement of the piston is thereby damped on both sides by the back pressure of the resiliently-acting gas cushion which is created on the side, in the direction of the piston. Alternatively, a single side of the piston can be filled with gas, so that it is forced out. The pressure of the gas can be adjusted according to requirements. Such a gas spring can serve to open a hatch and keep it open. By closing the valve, pressure is built up again so that the closing movement is simultaneously damped. Moreover, an opposite effect in which the piston is drawn by the gas pressure is also possible. In this case we speak of a gas-operated spring. Known brands are STABILUS, DELPHI, LESJÖFORS, FEBI BILSTEIN, JOHNS, MAPCO or METZGER.
Gas spring durability
Gas springs are constantly lubricated inside by oil or grease, and are therefore generally maintenance-free. If designed in accordance with the respective requirements they remain functional for many years. A creaking or squeaking noise, when opening or closing the door, may indicate a possible defect. A defective gas spring is possibly impaired in its damping or supporting role.
Repairing defective gas springs
The replacement of a gas spring on the tailgate or the hood is quite easy at many vehicle models and with a bit of skill it can be self made. Often, the gas spring is inserted only at the ends, in a holder, and is held by brackets. When removing the gas spring, these must be removed or pushed apart to expand.
