Ball joint – Function, description and well-known manufacturers
The ball joint is the movable connection between the control arm and wheel bearing housing on the front axle of the car. The "axle joints" are pressed, located on the wheel bearing housing and then fixed with self-locking nuts. Well-known manufacturers of such parts are NK, DELPHI, MAPCO, RUVILLE, SWAG, FEBI BILSTEIN and STARK.
If a ball joint is knocked loose or is defective
If the joint is worn out, this becomes noticeable by clicking noises, rumbling or loud beats on the front axle, especially on tight corners or on uneven streets. Once these signs occur, the front suspension should be checked. It is essential that the ball joints under large force do have not much room to move around in. It is worth a thorough inspection to find the affected joint. In this case, the "wheels" are moved against each other in different directions.
Replacing the ball joint: a short guide
If you would like to take care of this problem on your own, you’ll first need to jack up the car and remove the wheel. Then the torsion bar spring should be loosened, ideally with an impact wrench including 27 mm nut. Beforehand the length of the free “thread” will be measured. Only this way can the spring can be adjusted again to the correct level. Now the support joint should be sprayed with a rust remover, which can remove the dirt as thoroughly as possible. It’s even better to do this with a wire brush. Then the retaining ring is taken off. The next step is to mark the setting of the adjustment plate with a permanent marker. A predetermined breaking point should not be created at this point.
The ball joint - setting the track and camber
The adjustment plate is not fixed, so also later adjustment of the camber and the track is required. However, the setting of the plate can be done again for safety. The securing nut can now be removed. The lower eccentric disc is now exposed. This and the nut can then be removed and cleaned. Now the ball joint is pressed down, for example using a mounting iron. This can be difficult under certain circumstances. Alternatively, two nuts can be countered on the thread and turned with the help of a wrench. A rust remover spray is a great advantage.
