Shock absorber
Shock absorbers are found in every car, and are necessary for safety and for causing the oscillation of the sprung mass to quickly fade away. They are also used for the damping of vibrations and converting vibrational energy into heat. Shock absorbers intercept any shocks arising from road bumps. The well-known manufacturers of shock absorbers include MONROE, SACHS, BILSTEIN, BOGE, KONI, KYB, and STARK.
Structure and functions of shock absorbers
There are mechanical and hydraulic shock absorbers, but nowadays mostly hydraulic shock absorbers are used. Hydraulic shock absorbers consist of a piston rod, found in a piston in an oil filled cylinder. For pressure compensation the hydraulic shock absorbers feature a gas cushion of nitrogen and air, which acts like a spring and supports the effect of the suspension in the vehicle. The springs of the shock absorber are put to use when compression pressure is needed. The rebound is mostly harder than the compression, so that the support of the spring when driving on ramp shaped obstacles can be improved.
Shock absorbers in cars
Axle dampers are used in cars which consist of a vibration damper and a suspension strut. They are found on the axle. Each car has four shock absorbers. They are manufactured in single tube or twin tube construction.
Recognising defects in the shock absorbers
The driver does not always immediately notice decreasing performance, but they often unconsciously compensate for it with a change in driving behaviour. Defects of the shock absorbers are not suddenly noticeable, but instead gradually. If the car is made to vibrate in the area of the wheel by hand, you will notice multiple vibrations due to the defective shock absorbers. When driving on uneven surfaces, the car vibrates along with them. Noises are perceptible when driving on bad roads at a lower speed, the steering shimmies. At a screeching halt the skid mark is repeatedly interrupted due to jumping wheels. In turns, the car shows a spongy ride, increasing the sensitivity to side wind. If the shock absorbers are completely broken, leaking oil from the piston rod is visible. A repair of defective shock absorbers should be done in a workshop. You can only replace the shock absorbers if you have sufficient knowledge. If you want to buy new shock absorbers and switch them out, check our huge selection. Our range also includes a variety of other high quality car parts for different car makes and models.
