Oil Sump - Purpose and Function
The oil pan with its common wet sump lubrication is a component of the four-stroke engine and forms its bottom edge. For this purpose it is usually located at the lowest point of the engine, and connects directly to the crankcase. In the oil pan the necessary engine oil to lubricate the engine is stored. To drain the engine oil during an oil change, the oil pan is provided with an opening at its lowest point, which is closed by the oil drain plug. This consists of metal or sometimes plastic and is provided with a sealing ring. The oil pan of an average car engine has a capacity of two to eight liters. The material being used is usually a sheet of steel or cast metal, sometimes it also has integrated plastic components. The oil pan can also have a cooling function for the engine oil during operation and some oil pans have cooling fins. Automatic transmission furthermore have a special transmission oil pan. Known manufacturers of oil pans are among others VAICO, VAN WEZEL, FEBI BILSTEIN, DIEDERICHS and JOHNS.
If the oil pan is leaking or damaged
An oil pan should normally endure a vehicle lifetime. Nevertheless, corrosion damage can also occur here, which leads to rust with increasing vehicle age. When carelessly driving over obstacles there is a danger that the oil pan touches the ground and is damaged. Over-tightening the oil drain plug can also damage the treads in the drain hole and can cause leaking. In addition, the oil pan can leak oil due to a defective seal at the juncture of the crankcase.
Repairing or changing the oil pan
A faulty seal can be replaced, similarly a damaged thread can usually be repaired. Eventually a defective oil pan can be sealed shut by using a special sealant. However, if the damage is too large the oil pan must be changed. In order to dismantle the oil pan for a repair or a change it's best to lift the car on a hoist or to drive it to a workshop pit. Then, the engine oil should be released into an oil tray. Afterwards the retaining screws can be unscrewed and the oil pan can be removed.
