The indicators on the car and their function
In accordance with the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, all motor vehicles on the road must be equipped with indicators. The indicators are part of the lighting of the vehicle, and consist of four indicators, although some car models may have even more, such as on the exterior mirrors.Conventional indicators usually use 21 watt light bulbs, which are increasingly being replaced by LED turn signals.Flashing yellow lights are required by law, however, many vintage cars and American import vehicles have red ones. The indicators are controlled by a flasher unit which makes the lights flash on and off in a steady rhythm. As well as indicating the direction of travel, the indicators also serve as a warning by flashing simultaneously when pressing a button. The driver is shown that the indicator works by a signal in the car. Well-known manufacturers of indicators include Hella, Bosch and Valeo.
The indicators are flashing quickly - What does this mean?
In principle, the indicators are designed to last for the lifespan of the vehicle, which is why its maintenance normally limited to changing the light bulbs. If an indicator is faulty it lets the driver know by flashing faster than normal and with an audible faster click. If there is no clicking noise, and neither the front nor back indicator is working, this could indicate a defective indicator. Indicators fogged up on the inside with condesation could be due to a leaky seal or a damaged lamp cover.
Reparing the right and left indicators
Defective light bulbs can easily replaced. Even changing a broken lamp glass can usually be done without any problems. It's a bit more difficult to change a complete indicator, such as the case when the casing is damaged. The indicators are often built into a single unit of headlights or taillights, which is why the entire component must be then be replaced.
