Function of a flasher unit
In addition to the indicators, the flasher is an important part of the warning system of a vehicle. This produces the characteristic flashing light which is activated by the indicator which causes them to flash in a steady on and off rhythm. The flasher unit is an electrical component which consists of a pulse generator and a power switch. The pulse generator electronically emits a periodic electrical pulse, which in turn operates the circuit breaker. This is incorporated in the circuit of the corresponding indicator lights, which then opens and closes in predetermined rhythm. An electromechanical relay was originally used as a circuit breaker. The flasher relay usually clicks at each gear change, the noise is used as an acoustic signal that the indicator is working. In modern vehicles an electronic automotive flasher unit is is usually used, which works without any electromechanical components. This is usually no longer present as a separate component, but is integrated into a central electronic control unit. The characteristic clicking sound is generally made by a piezo speaker. Renowned manufacturers of flasher units and other components of the flashers are Bosch, Hella and Valeo
Checking the flasher function and detecting a defect
Flashers have a control function to show when a lamp is defective by clicking very quickly when indicating. A non-defective flashing light will also flash at a faster pace than usual. However, if there is no clicking sound and neither the front nor the rear flashing light is working, this may indicate a defective flasher. A defect can also be shown in the fact that the indicators are continuously lit rather than periodically flashing.
Installing a new flasher unit
In this case, if the vehicle has a separate flasher unit it can then be changed out at home in case it fails to work. Ordinarily, the flasher unit is plugged into a socket with plug contacts, from which it is easy to pull out. However, in some vehicle models it is integrated into the hazard warning system's switch, meaning that some parts of the dashboard must be removed to change it. Among many other spare parts of OEM quality, we also carry flasher units for numerous car brands and models in our online shop. They are inexpensive and easy to order, and your desired spare part will be delivered to your home immediately.
