Pulse generator crankshaft - Function
The position and the speed of the crankshaft are detected by sensors by the pulse generator of the car. With the aid of the transmitted pulse, the electronic engine control values calculate the correct ignition timing, and control the injection times and injection timings of the engine. The terms crankshaft sensor, inductive sensors or inductance transmittersare often used interchangeably for the pulse generator.Usually, the pulse generator is mounted in the region of the outer edge of the flywheel, which is fixedly connected to the crankshaft. The flywheel has a toothing made of iron or steel at its outer edge. The pulse generator in turn consists of a permanent magnet and an induction coil with a soft iron core. If a tooth of the flywheel passes through the pulse generator, a voltage pulse is induced in the coil according to the principle of electromagnetic induction. An alternating voltage is generated by the rotating flywheel, whose frequency is proportional to the rotational speed of the crankshaft, and is processed by the integrated circuit in the pulse control unit.By deliberately inserting tooth gaps in the ring gear of the flywheel, a voltage pulse at remains off at the appropriate point, from which the controller can detect the instantaneous position of the motor. Known producers include BOSCH, FEBI BILSTEIN, METZGER, HELLA, VDO, FACET and VEMO.
If the pulse generator crankshaft is defective
The pulse generator in a car requires no special maintenance and is general long-lasting.However, a defect may occur through corrosive damage to the electrical components. It could even bring about a short circuit of the coil winding. Other possible causes of a pulse generator malfunction are serious pollution, too great a distance from the ring gear and a damaged sprocket. Evidence of a defective pulse generators are misfirings or a complete stoppage of the engine. In addition, the control unit often stores an appropriate error code. Even with an ohm meter the pulse generator crankshaft can be tested. The internal resistance should be based on setting between 200 and 1000 ohms, a significantly lower value indicates a short circuit.
Replacing the crankshaft pulse
A defective encoder can be replaced with some skill on your own. Frequently peripheral components and covers must be removed or detached, and it is then possible to remove and replace the pulse generator. New pulse generator replacement parts can be ordered easily and inexpensively in our online shop. You will also find many more high-quality spare parts for numerous car brands and models.
