General information about the capacitor and popular manufacturers
The capacitor is an important part of the air conditioning in the car. It is also called a condenser. The capacitor is located in the air conditioning between the air conditioning compressor and the expansion valve. Popular manufacturers of capacitors are for example AKS DASIS, HELLA, VAN WEZEL, NRF, STARK, VALEO and DENSO.
The task and function of the capacitor
The air conditioning compressor draws the refrigerant, which was already evaporated in the evaporator, and compresses it. The refrigerant is brought to a different temperature and pressure level and the refrigerant gasses will be forwarded to the condenser. The compressor has often a magnetic coupling which can usually be activated when needed. The air conditioner of the car uses piston and swash plate compressors, which often have a variable engine displacement. For such compressors on and off switching is not necessary. Which capacitor must be purchased, depends on the vehicle and on the air conditioner. The capacitor serves as a condenser, it liquefies the gaseous, superheated refrigerant and cools it on the condenser’s temperature. The refrigerant loses heat while liquefying. The capacitor must give this heat to a cooling medium. This cooling medium is present in the form of air or water. The condenser fan ensures the proper ventilation of the condenser. This is necessary so that the refrigerant pressure remains always lower on the high pressure side.
Check whether the capacitor is defective
If the capacitor is defective, it is often only gradually noticeable when the air conditioner decreases it heating or cooling performance. The faulty capacitor can lead to total failure of the air conditioner. As part of the car’s maintenance, the air conditioning and the capacitor can be regularly checked. A defective capacitor can be replaced. If the capacitor is already broken for a long time, often only a replacement of the entire air conditioning will help. The capacitor should be in principle changed only in the workshop. For the replacement, professional competence is required so that the air conditioning is not damaged.
