Tail light / rear light function. General Description
The rear lights or tail lights are a part of the car's lights; they are attached to the rear of the vehicle to be visible for subsequent traffic. A car has two rear lights which are attached at the right and left at the rear boundary contours of the vehicle. A tail light is usually a component with different individual lamps, which have different functions. Reversing light, fog lamp, taillight, brake light and direction indicators are usually integrated in the rear light. The tail light glows red and makes the vehicle visible in the dark and in poor visibility for other road users. The bright red but brighter fog light can be used in poor visibility due to fog. The white reverse light signals that the car is reversing and also illuminates the area behind your vehicle. The red brake or stop signals a deceleration of the vehicle, and the yellow flashing direction indicator signals alert fellow road users to a change in the direction of travel. Instead of a conventional tail light bulb, LEDs are increasingly used for the brake light and rear light. Well-known manufacturers of rear lights and lamps are HELLA, ULO, JOHNS, DIEDERICHS, VAN WEZEL, VALEO and BOSCH.
Tail light defects
The rear lights, as all built in units, are basically designed for the lifetime of the vehicle and, as long as no further damage occurs, usually do not need to be replaced as a whole. Most frequent defect for the individual luminaires is a blown light bulb, whereas rear lights that have LEDs have a far longer service life and are practically maintenance-free. Occasionally leaks or damage to the lens can cause damage to the rear light from the inside.
Removing the tail light
A blown bulb can usually be changed very easily after removing a plastic cover and requires no additional tools. Also, you can usually easily replace damaged lamp glass. Even removing an entire rear light set can be performed on many car models without major difficulty on one’s own. Often only the plastic cover with the individual lamps must be removed to do this, in the trunk the tail light can be removed by loosening some screws.
