Suspension / chassis spring function and task. General Description
The suspension springs constitute the link between the body and the wheels of the vehicle. Their task is to compensate for road bumps and to ensure a uniform ground surface. The suspension is an important part of the chassis, which contributes to the comfort as well as safety. Without adequate suspension, especially at higher speeds, forces would cause shock and vibration on vehicle impact with the road and the wheels would temporarily lose contact with the road. Good contact with the road is important for the transmission of power, uniform adhesion, and safe braking of the vehicle. Manufactured coil springs used in modern vehicles for the chassis suspension are most frequently made of steel. Before this type of spring was used leaf and torsion springs were widespread. Another alternative is the hydro pneumatic suspension originally developed by Citroën. The vertical vibration resulting from the travel is dampened by shock absorbers, preventing a build-up in the vehicle. The springs are used in combination with the shock absorbers at the individual suspension. Leading manufacturers of springs are LESJÖFORS, SPIDAN, MONROE, SACHS, KYB, FEBI BILSTEIN and TRW.
When do you need to replace a suspension spring?
Under normal conditions the suspension springs should last for the vehicle’s lifetime. However such an excessive stress can cause shocks and blows, or even such strong corrosion that a vehicle spring cracks or even breaks. To ensure the safety therefore the springs must be visually examined regularly for damage, which should be done during a vehicle inspection. If a suspension spring is broken it must be replaced immediately.
If you need to replace a damaged suspension spring
A damaged suspension spring should be replaced in a specialist workshop. If you have the necessary knowledge and capabilities then you can even replace it yourself. You can buy the necessary spare parts for this in our online shop at low prices. Our shop has car suspension springs from well-known manufacturers for a variety of car makes and models on offer. The vehicle usually needs to be lifted first before replacing the suspension springs, and then the wheel and shock absorbers need to be removed. Then the old spring can be removed from the holder after it was relaxed by suitable counter pressure. You can then use the new spring. Exact instructions can be found in the technical literature or on the Internet.
