Release bearing - General information and well-known manufacturers
A release bearing is an important component of the car and contributes to the power transmission to the clutch. When choosing a release bearing it is important that the release bearing matches the car model. Some of the well-known manufacturers are LUK, SACHS, SKF, VALEO, JAPANPARTS, BLUE PRINT and SNR.
Installation and function the the release bearing
The release bearing is located between release lever and clutch cover, so above the floor, in front of the vehicle. The automatic clutch is also referred to as a plate spring and it rotates. The release bearing serves the direct power transmission from the release lever to the automatic clutch. A release bearing must absorb large axial forces. In older vehicles, the stoppage during normal driving was obtained from a reduced clutch play resulted from loosing the clutch pedal. Back then, the release bearing rotated only during the clutch engagement. In today’s modern vehicles the release bearing is designed to always rotate. Many vehicles today have a hydraulic clutch control. In these vehicles, the slave cylinder can be centrally integrated into the release bearing.
Don’t overload the release bearing
If the release bearing is too heavily loaded, it is exposed to particularly strong forces. It is important to protect the release bearing from unnecessary loads. Pressing the clutch unnecessarily long, at a red light for example, results in heavily overloading the release bearing, which also has repercussions on the clutch disc and the axial bearing of the crankshaft.
If the release bearing is defective or makes noise
If the release bearing is defective, the symptoms are decreased coupling responsiveness and in extreme cases, complete clutch failure. A defective release bearing is immediately noticeable. Since the clutch and the release bearing are essential for security, a defective release bearing should be repaired immediately. The vehicle should be brought as soon as possible in the workshop. The repair or replacement of the release bearing should be done only in the workshop.
