Master Cylinder of the clutch - function and task
The clutch can be mechanically, usually via a cable, or hydraulically carried out.In a hydraulic clutch the pressure force applied by the driver is transmitted to the clutch pedal via hydraulic fluid in the coupling line to the clutch. The transfer of the pedal force on the hydraulic fluid takes place in the master cylinder. Upon actuation of the pedal, a piston pushes the master cylinder to the fluid column in the hydraulic line. After the release of the pedal, the piston is returned by a spring. At the other end of the clutch cable, the hydraulic fluid is pressed into the slave cylinder while operating the clutch .The pressure there acts again on a piston, which produces the necessary lift to eventually separate the clutch. The gear ratio between the input and output pressure can be adjusted by different piston diameters. If the piston in the master cylinder has a smaller diameter than the slave cylinder the pedal forces decrease.Known manufacturers of hydraulic clutch components include SACHS, HERTH + BUSS, TRW and BOSCH.
If the master cylinder is defective
Despite the similarities to the hydraulic brake system, the components of the hydraulic clutch actuation have another characteristic of wear because the hydraulic components of master and slave cylinders are kept under maximum pressure throughout the entire stroke. This leads to increased wear on the sealing elements. High reliability and durability of the hydraulic clutch components is ensured through special manufacturing processes. Damaged seals mean the hydraulic system leaks and can not maintain the necessary pressure to separate the power transmission between engine and gearbox. This is particularly noticeable if, after depressing the pedal and gear after a while, the clutch closes automatically and drives the car.
Replacing the master cylinder
With the necessary knowledge one can remove and replace the master cylinder on their own. This is located on the clutch pedal in the footwell of the driver's side and can be disassembled after disconnecting it from the hydraulic line and replacing it with a new master cylinder. After changing it, the hydraulic line must be vented with a bleed screw. In our online shop you will find all the necessary spare parts for the hydraulic clutch system of your car at low prices. You can also purchase many other parts of brand quality and for many car models in top quality and at unbeatable prices.
