Clutch cable function and task
The separating and closing the power transmission between the engine and transmission when starting and changing gears is done by the clutch, by stepping on the clutch pedal. The force acting on the pedal is normally transmitted hydraulically or mechanically to the clutch. For mechanical clutch actuating, a cable is used. When the pedal is pressed the clutch cable is tightened. This is connected at the other end to the release lever, which in turn actuates the clutch release bearing and therefore the clutch.Over time, the lining of the driver disk wears out, which, in opposite to a new cluth, the looseness of the clutch is reduced.Thereby the position of the release lever is adjusted continuously, whereby with the increasing wear of the migration route the clutch cable is increased. Therefore, in order to compensate for the wear effect, the clutch clearance has to be increased by an increased length adjustment of the clutch cable again. To avoid a regularly required manual length adjustment, clutch cables are used which have an automatic adjustment mechanism. Well-known manufacturers of clutch cables include TRW, NK, SACHS, ATE, LUK, and FEBI BILSTEIN.
Adjusting the clutch cable
If the length of the clutch cable is not adjusted to the decreasing clutch clearance, the releaser runs constantly meaning that the clutch no longer closes completely. This leads to increasingly slipping of the clutch and to increased wear. With clutch cables with a manual length setting, the clearance can be adjusted either on the clutch pedal by turning an adjusting nut or the release lever.
When the clutch cable is broken
The cable is exposed to high mechanical tensile load, which can break in case of excessive wear.In this case, the clutch can no longer be operated, whereby the power transmission between the engine and transmission can no longer be separated.
Replacing the clutch
The clutch can generally be easily switched, while the setting and adjustment of the new cable line may require some patience. To remove the old clutch cable a retaining clip away or a screw must be removed at the junctions to the pedal and the clutch, then the cable can be removed and replaced.A new clutch cable in brand quality can be ordered inexpensively and conveniently in our online shop. In addition, our range includes a variety of other high-quality spare parts for numerous car brands and models.
