Bumper - function and technical development
The bumpers are the front and rear boundary of a motor vehicle. Early on in the history of the car, the bumper was designed to protect the actual body from damage in a collision with an obstacle or another vehicle. Originally, these heavy bumpers made of metal, which was often chrome, and was installed and firmly integrated into the body. Thereby, the forces in a collision were transmitted freely to the vehicle frame, whereby damage could occur to the body. Moreover, the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists in the event of an accident increased significantly by this construction. Since the 1970s, the bumpers are therefore mounted onto the body via energy-absorbing bumpers, where elements and coverings absorb minor impacts directly from plastic.Because of their energy-absorbing effect modern bumpers are also collectively referred to as bumpers.
Current Trends
Bumpers of newer car models are usually completely covered with a skirt made of plastic. Since the 1990s, the bumpers have are increasingly been integrated into the overall appearance of the vehicle and are often painted to match the vehicle colour. Due to the rounded design that rests on the body of the vehicle, both the safety of pedestrians has been further improved and the aerodynamics have been optimized as well. Even electronic components are increasingly integrated into the bumpers. New car models are increasingly equipped with reversing sensors or rear cameras that detect obstacles and assist in parking maneuvers.
Repairing damage to the bumper
Minor damage to the bumper can usually be a relatively simple fix. Plastic parts can often be glued to the bumper . Thermoplastics, deformed by heat, can be reformed again, which can eliminate some dings. Scratches and superficial damage can be corrected on painted sheet metal by grinding them and the filling them, and then painting the bumper. In case of severe damage however, replacing the bumper is often unavoidable . For this, however, a few fitting have to be loosened and some parts might need to be removed. The old bumper can then be taken from its holder and be replaced. Well-known manufacturers of bumpers include Van Wezel , Diederichs, Johns and Prasco. Buy everything you need for repairs at low prices in our online shop.
