Alternator / generator function. A short description
Every car has a generator, called an alternator. The alternator is used to recharge the vehicle's battery and thus to ensure the power supply for the vehicle. To make sure this occurs, the motor is powered with fuel. The generator is connected to the motor and generates electricity in this manner. This principle is similar to that of the bike dynamo, where kinetic energy is converted into electricity. In today's vehicles, usually almost only three-phase alternators are used, whereas DC generators are used mainly in vintage cars. Well-known manufacturers of alternators are BOSCH, VALEO, LUCAS ELECTRICAL, ALANKO, STARK, HELLA and CV PSH.
The problem with a defective alternator
If the alternator is defective, then the battery does not charge, which is a huge problem. This will become noticeable when you wish to start the car. Modern vehicles are now equipped with a warning light that indicates when the electric alternator is faulty. But it does not have to always be a total loss. Since the alternator is a very important part of the vehicle, one should not too long wait to undergo a diagnostic. In most cases, it is possible to repair the alternator, since it is usually due a faulty diode or a defective voltage regulator. But it could happen that the belt is broken or that a cable has failed. Even a loose connection may be the reason for failure.
If the alternator is broken. Repair work on a damaged alternator
If work on the alternator must be carried out, then you should perform it with care, because if the voltage is too high, then the alternator may be damaged quickly. Therefore, the work should be performed by an automotive electrician. If you would rather do it yourself or would like to inspect the alternator, you should make sure that the battery is disconnected and the alternator’s cables are never attached while the engine is running. Otherwise, the alternator can be damaged by the resulting peaks in voltage. If you would like to buy an alternator, then you should pay attention what power the alternator has. All parts are available cheaply and quickly in our shop.
