Air Conditioning Hose - function and requirements
The function of the air conditioner of a car is based on a circulatory system, in which different components are integrated. In this case, a gaseous refrigerant is compressed and liquefied, and it releases heat. Subsequently, the refrigerant is evaporated again, by which it absorbs heat and cools the air which is then supplied to the interior. The individual components of the cooling circuit are connected to this piping and hoses, through which the refrigerant can circulate. Air hoses are used everywhere in the air conditioning as supply lines where pipe connections are too rigid and inflexible. Here in the circuit both the states of aggregation as well as the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant vary, whereby corresponding demands are placed on the tubing being used. Moreover, the dimensions of the air hoses must be adapted to the air conditioning. Air tubes are usually made of multiple layers of different plastics. Thus the outer tube is often made from synthetic rubber in which a print carrier made of PET or a similar plastic is embedded. The interior of the hose has a special coating which is resistant to the refrigerant. Often coverings made of metal mesh are used. Known air hose manufacturers include FRIGAIR, VEMO, HELLA, VALEO and METZGER.
If the air hose has burst or is leaking
Since a complete sealing of the flexible lines is technically hardly possible, generally up to 10% of the refrigerant may escape the hoses and the seals of the cooling circuit each year and need to be replaced during maintenance. Through fatigue or mechanical damage, the air hose may increasingly start to leak or even rupture, causing larger quantities refrigerant to escape. Too large a loss of coolant not only affects the function of the air conditioning, but can also damage the air compressor, which must be constantly lubricated by a refrigerant added special oil.
Repairing or replacing a damaged air conditioning hose
Damaged air pipes can be repaired frequently, for which special repair kits are available.Sometimes, however, a complete replacement of the air hose is required. The hoses of the air conditioner are mostly accessible through the engine compartment and can be removed at the junctions to the individual components. Everything necessary for this can be found at particularly good value in our online shop. We also carry many other spare parts in OEM quality for many car makes and models.
