The formation and development of Citroën
The French automaker Citroën, based in Paris, was founded in 1919 by André-Gustave Citroën, an entrepreneur active in the production of vehicle transmissions. The Double-V Form, a gear wheel tooth, later became the distinctive logos of Citroën. The first car model produced in a series was the Citroën A 10 HP from 1919. Before World War II cars such as the Citroën Rosalie and the Citroën Traction Avant were produced. The 2CV model, produced since 1949, was especially popular and was nicknamed “Duck” in Germany. Until 1990, over 5 million units were manufactured by the Citroën 2CV including a variant as a van. In 1955, Citroën introduced the first D model. The Citroën DS, called "La Déesse", attracted buyers both by its unusual design and its technical innovations, such as the hydro pneumatic suspension attention. The series was built until 1975 and was succeeded by the Citroën CX and later the XM and C6 models. In 1976 a merger with Peugeot to the PSA Peugeot Citroën group came about. The mid-range model Citroën BX was introduced in the 1980s. Its successor was the Citroën Xantia, built from 1993 to 2001. In the small car segment, Citroën built the model Saxo between 1996 and 2003, whose successor models were the C2 and C3.
