The Company History of Alfa Romeo

Founded in 1919 in Milan under the name Società Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, it is nowadays better known as Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. and is located in Turin in northern Italy. The acronym A.L.F.A. was chosen as the brand name and comes from the first letter of each of the words in the name. The first car model was the A.L.F.A. 24 HP, which was built from 1910 to 1913. In 1915 the car manufacturer was in a crisis and was taken over by the defence contractor of the Italian engineer Nicola Romeo. In 1920 automobile production was resumed under the new name of Alfa Romeo. The sports car Alfa Romeo RL from 1923 successfully participated in car racing; the chief factory rider at the time was Enzo Ferrari. From 1933 to 1948 Alfa Romeo was a part of the State’s IRI group of companies. Some well-known Alfa Romeo models from this period are the 6C and 8C series. The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 was the fastest production car in the world at that time. Alfa Romeo then turned for the first time to a wider audience of buyers with the Giulietta series which was produced between 1954 and 1964. The roadster Alfa Romeo Spider was introduced in 1966 and over six generations were built until 2010. Another milestone was the mid-size car produced from 1962 to 1978, the Alfa Romeo Giulia. The original series was revived with the newly presented Alfa Romeo Giulia (type 952) in 2015.
